Nicholas Whitman was the son of German immigrants to rural Ashburnham MA. He served in 2 Massachusetts Regiments in 1777 and 1778. After the war, he lived in Ashburnham and operated a farm in the town with his sone Jacob. Nicholas and his wife Elizabeth, who was also the child of a German immigrant, moved to Reading NY late in their lives to live with their daughter Nancy and her husband Ozias Partridge Jr. The death and burial records for Nicolas and Elizabeth Whitman have not been found. They were likely buried in Reading NY. No monument honors the service of Nicolas Whitman.
